Your country needs you..

In a stagnating economy where the government is failing to grow it by supporting those who create jobs, the best thing we can do is to support and start small businesses. Unlike popular belief, small businesses don't put larger one's out of business, and even if they did, they would absorb all their employees and create lots of additional jobs in the process. Let's take P&G (Gilette) in our country as example. By what we can gather on the internet they employ between 300 and 800 people locally. They produce many lines of products, from disposable nappies to batteries, let's...

Dad & son stuff

I often reminisce over my younger years when I see pictures of a father showing his son how to shave, to me it is one of the few lessons in life that is reserved for us men and an experience that should be cherished and enjoyed. I was not privileged to share that with my dad, and if you are are around my age (just over mid 40's), a South African and 'of European descent', chances are you were not that lucky either. There are a few reasons for this life's lesson passing me by, for one, my dad sported a beard for much of...

The multiple blade pie in the sky. Part 2

Remember when the twin blade cartridges for the big commercial company came out and the ads proclaimed that the first blade would lift and cut the hair, and the second would then cut it even closer before it would retract back under the skin? If you don't remember Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, Jennifer Rush, Duran Duran and Depeche Mode it was before you started shaving and you should go ask your dad or granddad about this claim.  Well, a couple of things bugs me about this 'science'. Lets start of by saying cutting the hair so short that it retracts...

The multiple blade pie in the sky, Part 1.

One thing I simply cannot fathom is how men believe (or not question why) we need all those blades in cartridges, let us disregard the billions of your money spent on marketing campaigns, I still do not see how cartridge razors have surpassed safety razors in popularity. Are us men so impressionable !? I figured the vast majority of us as clear thinkers with a no nonsense approach to life, but if sales figures of razors and the tinned gunk we get sold as shaving cream are anything to go by, this is clearly not the case. I want to...

You said save MILLIONS ?!

You said save MILLIONS ?!

You will find lots of info on the internet about savings gained by switching to (or starting out with) classic wet shaving, but very few are specific, and none offers any comparisons that are applicable to South African men and local products. This is why I have done a comparison shaving a few weeks with a popular 3 blade cartridge, their razor, a can of shaving gel and a can of shaving foam. I did the same with a shaving soap, safety razor and a brush. I have used a baseline costing by averaging offerings on the internet and supermarkets,...
