J.A. Henckels and Co is quite a popular vintage brand that can be found relatively widespread all over the world, mainly because the razor division of the company was in existence for many years, it started in 1731 and produced straight razors up to 1969. and exported these to many countries around the globe. They manufactured a lot of high quality razors over these years, and the company is still around under the name 'Zwilling', producing knifes and kitchen wares.
Quite surprisingly there is not a lot of information about these razors or their history out there, here is one page that could spark your interest in this German brand of razor.
This model is a full hollow ground stainless steel model and is in great condition. The razor is in factory condition, but we have honed this one up a bit to a better shaving edge. The razor itself has minor marks on the blade and a few fine crachs around the pinning. The blade centers nicely between the scales, and has a black wedge fitted to the orange celluloid scales.
Thre razor strops easily at any speed on a paddle and hanging strop. a Nice, close single pass shave was the result, very much as one would expect from this type of grind and blade shape, there was one spot on my face where it did 'jump' a bit (but keep in mind I do all test shaves without stretching my skin with the other hand), so I would say this razor is more ideal for guys with lighter beard or beard with a lower density. By lighter beard we mean coarseness, not colour. Interesting fact...most 'blonde' beards are heavier/thicker than men with darker hair.
*Vintage razors are priced according to model and availability, time spent cleaning and reconditioning them, and also time spent getting the edge into a shave ready condition (some are preserved as is, or sold as is for the new owner to sharpen) Please enquire if you need additional work done to this razor prior to purchase.
All straight razors will require a stropping on leather after its first use. Pics are unedited (for detail) and provide a true image of the condition of the razor.
The rounded point razor blade is a fatty at 13/16 in height and has a cutting edge of around 67 mm long and a weight of 50 grams. The spine is 5 mm thick with no spine wear. The dimensions results in a bevel angle just over 14 degrees.
